Destination Wedding Colorado
The Rocky Mountains are the home to thousands of beautiful places in Colorado to get married. It’s no wonder… we have the built-in scenery, beautiful weather and so many luxurious wedding venues to choose from. Many wedding venues and planners offer specific Colorado Destination Wedding packages. Here are some things to keep in mind when planning your destination wedding Colorado.
- Travel and Transportation are vital to plan through. How will your guests get from Denver International Airport to the destination mountain resort? Will they rent cars or take the ski shuttles? Once in the resort will they need a car? What will guests do on the day of the wedding…will you offer shuttle transportation, does the resort village offer shuttles (and what time do they start or stop), or will all guests drive themselves? Many villages, like Copper Mountain offer a shuttle that is ideal…and it stops running 30 minutes after your event ends. Also consider driving in snow is challenging, especially if you are a destination wedding group from Florida.
- Altitude sickness is real. There is a sharp difference between atmosphere at sea level versus our mountain resorts that can be 10,000 feet up. As a Colorado Wedding Planner who specializes in mountain weddings, I see guests with altitude sickness every week. And it affects the young and old alike. Some things to do to help….drink plenty of water, double what you drink at home. Eat bananas and take tums, often. And remember that up high 1 drink equals 2 drinks at home. Be aware of this so we don’t have a sloppy drunk wedding that may ruin the vibe for the bride and groom.
- Scenery is what you are paying for, but that’s outside not inside. I advise my clients not to spend money on outdoor decorations, but not to neglect indoor receptions. Don’t waste money on an arch or huge outdoor floral sprays if you’ve got 10,000 feet of mountains behind you, that’s what you paid for. Don’t obstruct the view. However, don’t make the mistake of thinking that same view is inside your reception room. A wedding planner or designer will help you bring the mountains inside to your table centers, incorporate the mountains into your dessert bar, and design a head table that pops with its own mountain elegant decor.
- Some of my favorite Colorado destination wedding venues are Copper Mountain, The Charter at Beaver Creek and Hotel Colorado in Glenwood Springs. They all embody a few vital traits that make your wedding day wonderful. The scenery is amazing. They are easy to get around both for you, the vendors, and your guests. Copper and Beaver Creek have shuttles that run through the village which makes it so easy for your guests. The staff at all three places is top notch, and one thing I look for is the ability to be creative; staff will let you design a thematic dessert bar, or they work with you to create a custom specialty drink, for example. All three are venues with lodging which I usually opt for if possible. It’s fun for your guests to all stay together and it’s so much easier on everyone.
